New HSE Figures Show Progress on Workplace Vehicle Fatalities – But 14 Lives Still Lost

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released its latest annual figures for work-related fatalities. In 2024/25, 124 people lost their lives due to workplace accidents (down from 138 the previous year). While this decrease is encouraging, there’s still more to be done to ensure everyone gets home safely.

One key area of improvement is fatalities involving moving vehicles. These have dropped by 44%, a significant and promising reduction. It’s evidence that targeted safety measures are starting to have an impact. But behind every statistic is a real person, and 14 individuals were still killed after being struck by a moving vehicle at work last year. Fourteen families experienced an unimaginable loss. And for us, even one is too many. Our mission is to bring this number to zero.

But fatalities are only part of the story. While the latest figures for non-fatal injuries are not yet available, previous data show over 1,200 non-fatal injuries involving moving vehicles — many of which are life-altering.

Take Lisa Ramos, for example. Lisa bravely shares her 19-year journey since being struck by a forklift truck (FLT), detailing the impact her injury has had, not just on her, but on her family. Stories like Lisa’s remind us that workplace injuries cast long shadows.

Half of fatalities in the waste sector are from being struck by a moving vehicle

Looking at specific sectors over a longer term to account for fluctuations, the figures highlight an ongoing challenge in waste and recycling, where 53% of worker fatalities involved moving vehicles. That’s more than triple the average across all sectors, where these incidents account for 15% of deaths.

That’s why we continue to work closely with our partners in waste and recycling to drive change. Today, nearly 200 waste and recycling sites are being made safer with our proximity warning systems - part of our commitment to helping our customers build a culture of awareness and prevention around workplace vehicles.

Because no one should lose their life — or their future — just for doing their job.
