Viridor Cardiff Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is the largest ERF in Wales treating waste from the local authority and local business contracts. The facility, which has been operational since 2014, handles around 425,000 tonnes of residual waste (non-recyclable), per year.
Since 2019 they’ve been using SiteZone Proximity Warning Systems to keep their staff safe, and it’s now a big part of their safety culture, embedded into their Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments, and Inductions.
Neil Godwin, Tipping Hall Supervisor at Viridor Cardiff comments,
"The SiteZone System is a crucial part of our site safety. The tag has become a part of our PPE. As soon as an operator is alerted by the system, we automatically stop the machine, down the tools/bucket and look round for the danger. It’s saved several accidents from happening.”
And it’s not just their staff who use it but signs around the site remind visitors to wear their tag and if not worn, visitors/contractors will be called up for an unsafe act with repeat offenders potentially being banned from site.
Neil went on to say,
“We won’t let an item of plant start operation without SiteZone installed. And we know that when we need a speedy service SiteZone will do whatever they can to get to us. Just recently we had a last-minute delivery on a Friday of loading shovels we had been waiting on for a few months. We rang SiteZone on the Thursday, and they moved some jobs about to fit us in on the Monday so that we could start using our vehicles straight away. We have an excellent relationship with their office team and engineers who are always accommodating, follow site rules to the letter, and have a high quality of workmanship.”
Viridor Cardiff were also early adopters of the data platform. Neil adds,
“If we see a spike in breaches for a team member, we’ll have a word with them to understand why and correct the behaviour.”
